How has Coronavirus affected students?

How has Coronavirus affected students?

The coronavirus seems to have affected various sectors, including education. In particular, the virus can affect students' learning habits and their targets of achievements. Children who have just started going to school will have to get in the habit of going to school again. Because of this, parents will have to exercise once again to send their child to school. Some negative effects of coronavirus on students and their education can be mentioned as follows:

  • Effects on school activities of a student

Most of the students have not been able to go to school. It has affected on students' daily school activities such as going to school, attending prayers, singing the national anthem, going the class room, showing up in the attendance book, handing homework to the teacher, learning new lessons, going to labs for practice and doing other class activities, taking new homework, playing with friends after having lunch at break time, returning home after finishing the day's studies, etc.

  • Lessons may not be completed

If the schools are closed for a long period, the textbook lessons may not be completed on the specified time. This may cause the students to skip some lessons in school.

  • Increase in pace of teaching.

If the schools reopen after long time, the pace of teaching may be higher. This may lead the students to acquire incomplete or partial knowledge.

  • Decrease in schooling

The teacher has to teach only from one place and he/she cannot solve the problems of all the students individually. This can affect the weaker students more.

  • The volume of homework will be increased

If the pace of teaching is increased, the volume of homework will also be increased. The size of homework of the weaker students may be multiplied due increase in number of unfinished homework.

  • Lack of reading habits at home

Most of the students are staying at home and they must have finished their homework long ago. Now, they don't want to study and are only interested in other activities like watching TV, hanging out on social media, playing video games etc. They are shocked when their parents advice them to read.

  • Effects on a student's terminal and annual exam results.

Not being able to study well for the entire period will definitely affects the results of students' exam. Even if there is no change in the ranking of the students, there may be a change in the grading

These possible results show that the coronavirus (covid 19) is in a dire situation and that the students will have to bear the brunt of it as well as the parents. But, there is a solution to every problem. If the parents, school administration, teachers, students themselves and the government can find the solution to the above mentioned problems or effects, the solution will not be far off. We feel that the solutions can be found from the efforts mentioned below.

  • The efforts that parents can make

If possible, parents should teach the children themselves and if not, keep the children by their side to read school books and make notes and help them to get more educational materials from the internet. They can also find the solutions to the problems by calling their teachers. If the school is reopened, parents can help children to memorize the lesson clearly by discussing the questions and their answers asked on both schoolwork and homework, which can speed up their learning.

  • The efforts that the school administration can make

The school administration can also solve the problem by providing online education. The administration can make necessary arrangements for teachers to conduct online education. If the school is reopened, the school administration will have to help the teachers create a new effective lesson plan. The administration can also increase the number of teachers.

  • The efforts that teachers can make

The teachers can teach online if they themselves or the school administration or the government have made the arrangements for online education and they can also contribute by answering the questions asked by the students by phone calls or emails.

  • The efforts that the students (of higher classes) can make

Even if you spent some time entertainment, you have to spend most of your time studying. In case of online education, you should attend the classes using your laptop or mobile phone. In the absence of online classes or no internet facility, you should prepare answers by telling the problems to your teachers and classmates. You can also enlist the help of your elders for this.

  • The efforts that the government can make

The government can also provide online education by arranging necessary mechanism for school and teachers. If the schools are reopened, the government may announce monetary or non-monetary or both of them relief packages to educational institutions, teachers and the students. The government can also increase the number of teachers in government schools.
